Pakistan Stumbles in Junior Asia Cup 2023 Final, Losing to India 2-1

In a disappointing turn of events, Pakistan faced a major setback in the final match of the Junior Asia Cup 2023 against arch-rival India, losing by a scoreline of 2-1 in Salalah, Oman.

The match saw India's Angad Bar Singh make a crucial strike in the 13th minute, giving his team an early lead. Just seven minutes later, Araijeet Singh Hundal extended India's advantage with another goal, putting them in a comfortable two-goal lead.

Pakistan managed to find the back of the net in the 38th minute, as Ali Basharat scored a goal assisted by his teammate Shahid Abdul. However, despite their domination in the second half with relentless attacks, Pakistan was unable to break through India's strong defense.

India emerged as the tournament champions, having not lost a single match throughout the competition, while Pakistan's sole defeat came in the final encounter.

Abdul Hannan Shahid of Pakistan was honored with the Player of the Tournament award, while Abdul Rahman finished as the top scorer of the tournament.

Notably, the two teams had previously faced each other in the 2015 final held in Malaysia, where India emerged victorious with a scoreline of 6-2 against Pakistan.

With this triumph, India has set a new record by clinching their fourth Men's Junior Asia Cup title. They had previously secured the title in 2004, 2008, and 2015. On the other hand, Pakistan had won the tournament in 1988, 1992, and 1996.

However, it is unfortunate to mention that the Pakistan junior hockey team faced financial difficulties during the Asia Cup in Oman. Despite requests made by the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) to the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) for funds prior to the tournament, the players and officials did not receive their daily allowance of $100 per day. The PHF took the responsibility of covering the expenses for tickets and accommodation for the squad out of their own resources.
