Shammi Kapoor, the legendary actor of Indian cinema, captivated audiences on the silver screen from the 1950s to the 1970s. With his charismatic performances, he delivered numerous hit films. While he romanced many actresses on screen, his real-life love story was filled with challenges.

Geeta Bali, a talented and impactful actress, was one of the leading actresses of the 1950s. Shammi Kapoor had given his heart to Geeta. Their paths crossed on the sets of the film "Rangeen Raatein" in Ranikhet in 1955, and that's where their love story began. However, both their families were initially opposed to their union. Undeterred by familial disapproval, the couple defied their families' wishes and got married in a temple. Although their families were initially upset, they eventually came around and accepted the marriage.

In a throwback interview with The Quint, the legendary superstar Shammi Kapoor shared details about his marriage to Geeta Bali. He said, "I did three films with Geeta (Coffee House, Coca Cola, and Mohar). We really liked each other, and then we fell in love. She was a star, and I was nothing, yet she believed in me. I proposed marriage, and three years later, in 1955, we got married right here at 4 in the morning in Bandra. We took seven rounds, and then she took out a lipstick from her purse and gave it to me, saying, 'Put it on my cannabis.' And so I did. It was beautiful; she was a strong support for me. After her death, I became quite careless and lonely."

Shammi Kapoor also revealed his journey of falling in love with Geeta Bali, as described by Raut Ahmed in his book "Shammi Kapoor: The Game Changer." The superstar shared, "There were some question marks. Geeta was a year older than me. She acted alongside my father, Prithviraj Kapoor, in a film called 'Anand Math' (1952). She also worked with my brother, Raj Kapoor, in Kidar Sharma's film 'Baware Nain' (1950). I didn't know how my family would react to this. Deep inside myself, I was adamant that she (Geeta) should be mine. Geeta kept telling me, 'Shammi, I love you. I can't think of living without you.'"

During the interview, Shammi Kapoor revealed how they decided to get married. He said, "On August 23, 1955, Geeta and I were in a hotel in Juhu, Mumbai. That's when I proposed to Geeta again, expecting her usual nod and smile. However, she surprised me by saying, 'Okay, Shammi, let's get married.'"

Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali got married in 1955. They welcomed their son, Aditya Raj Kapoor, in 1956, and their daughter, Kanchan Kapoor, in 1961. The couple was overjoyed to become parents. However, fate had a different plan in store for them. In January 1965, Geeta Bali fell ill on the set of one of her films and contracted smallpox. She was hospitalized for several days but tragically passed away on January 21, 1965, at the young age of 35. Shammi Kapoor was devastated by her untimely departure.

Later on, Shammi Kapoor distanced himself from the film world due to frequent health issues. Eventually, his kidneys failed, and on August 14, 2011, the film industry bid farewell to Shammi Kapoor, the rockstar of films, at the age of 79.

Although Shammi Kapoor is no longer with us today, his legacy lives on in the hearts of people through his films. What are your thoughts on this captivating love story? We would love to hear your comments. If you have any suggestions or advice for us, please share them as well.
