Gundogan's brace against Leeds has taken his goal tally to six in the current Premier League season, having played 29 games. This is a slight decrease from his top performance for City, when he scored 13 goals in 28 league games during the 2020-21 season.

In their encounter with Leeds, Manchester City managed to maintain their four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table, despite a late scare from their opponents who played under new manager Sam Allardyce for the first time.

Ilkay Gundogan's two excellent first-half goals proved to be the difference-maker for City, who seemed to be completely in control as they looked to secure their 10th consecutive league win. The first goal was a neat finish by Gundogan, assisted by Riyad Mahrez, into the bottom left corner of Joel Robles' net. The second goal was a near-identical effort, but this time, Gundogan found the opposite corner of the net, again assisted by Mahrez.

In the second half, City failed to find a third goal that would have finished off the game, with even the usually prolific Erling Haaland unable to find the back of the net. Their best chance to seal the victory came with six minutes left on the clock, when Pascal Struijk fouled Phil Foden in the box and a penalty was awarded. However, Haaland decided not to take the penalty and instead, Gundogan stepped up, only to see his effort hit the post and miss out on a hat-trick.

Leeds then managed to score a goal, 58 seconds after Gundogan's penalty miss, through a low finish by substitute Rodrigo after Manuel Akanji failed to clear a long ball. This gave Leeds a glimmer of hope and their fans roared them on in search of an unlikely equalizer, but City held on to secure all three points.

Pep Guardiola's team is still on track for a treble, with their next game being a crucial Champions League semi-final match against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday. With only four Premier League games remaining, City now has a significant lead over second-placed Arsenal, who play third-placed Newcastle on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Leeds and Allardyce are still embroiled in a grim relegation battle, with three games left. Although they are currently out of the relegation zone on goal difference, they will need to show more attacking intent in the coming weeks if they hope to avoid the drop.
